Kokomo

On June 5, 2024, we mourn the passing of Derrick Shelton, a cherished member of the community. Derrick was born in Birmingham, Alabama, as the youngest child of Horace and Irene Shelton. His family relocated to Indiana during his childhood, where he attended Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church with his ones.

Derrick's spiritual journey began early in life when he embraced Christ, a commitment he reaffirmed later on. After completing high school, he briefly served in the U.S. Navy. Notably, Derrick excelled in sports, particularly football, in Kokomo, Indiana. His achievements were celebrated in local publications like the Kokomo Tribune.

A graduate of Taylor High School in 1984, Derrick ventured to the Pacific Northwest in the early 1990s and established a career in general construction as a skilled carpenter and painter on commercial properties.

Known for his ability to see the best in others, Derrick's legacy lives on through his decision to donate the gift of sight. He is survived by his children Miranda, Derrick, Ericka Ann, and Keisha; sister Angela (Dana); brother Douglas; along with numerous relatives and friends. The family expresses gratitude to their loyal friends and supporters during this difficult time.

A celebratory visitation honoring Derrick will take place from 9 - 11 am on Saturday, June 8th at the N.L. Bluitt Jr Funeral Chapel located at 511 E Monroe St. Following this gathering, a graveside service will be held at Crown Point Cemetery on 1101 E Sycamore St. The N.L. Bluitt Jr Funeral Chapel is privileged to support the Shelton Family during this period of loss and remembrance.
